Five Years of Merrymaking

The Hollands! We are obviously more than just a band, we are a family. However, as we celebrate our five year anniversary of full-time travel, we thought it would be fun to take a look at all of the merrymaking our little family has made.

Our children, Graciana and Banjo were 14 and 10 when we hit the road full-time but began performing with us well before. I can’t even imagine how many total shows they have already played at their young age, but the list below showcases approximately 90 shows a year since 2011, and displays the hard work of touring through the whole of the US, Canada, Australia, and SE Asia. Even more than that, every single one of these performances we had the honor of teaching and leading our favorite song “Old Man’s Town.”

If you haven’t heard “Old Man’s Town” have a listen here. Video was recorded in 2014 at the Habanero Collective in Phoenix, AZ

The song was written in 2010 and originally appeared on our album Ashes to Beauty. However, the song quickly became our families heart song and appeared again as a more rollicking version on our 2013 release, Over Land and Leas. We are currently laying down tracks for a new project and the hope is to add another version of the song to that album.

“Old Man’s Town” is based on the Banjo Patterson Poem, ‘The Road to Old Man’s Town.’

The fields of youth are filled with flowers,
The wine of youth is strong:
What need have we to count the hours?
The summer days are long.
But soon we find to our dismay
That we are drifting down
The barren slopes that fall away
Towards the foothills grim and grey
That lead to Old Man's Town.

And marching with us on the track
Full many friends we find:
We see them looking sadly back
For those who've dropped behind

But God forfend a fate so dread --
Alone to travel down
The dreary road we all must tread,
With faltering steps and whitening head,
The road to Old Man's Town!

We had been doing an Australian folklore workshop and found the verse in one of Banjo Patterson’s books of poetry. The poem really struck a cord at the time as I had been working in nursing homes doing music therapy and was really taken by how important community was in our understanding of meaning and quality of life. At the same time, Craig and I were journeying thought a reconciliation process in our marriage and the poem just really hit home. The song showcases a sing along chorus that encourages our audience to see the value in each other, to push through the storms of relationship, to find the beauty in community, believing the ancient words, ‘that when one falls, we all fall and when one is honored, we are all honored.’

Sing my woes, sing my joys
Sing my friends, now don't be coy
Sing my sad and pretty song
Sing oh sing, oh sing along

unspecified-1We have lead this song at festivals and in more intimate gatherings to handfuls of kinfolk all willing to bellow out the chorus with us. Whether a large or small group, hearing others heartfelt voices in one accord has brought more joy than anything else on this musical journey.

Of course, we’ve had a few cherished moments that stand out including leading the song in our hometown venue, Kavarna, which we performed at the night before we left in the bus. We were covered in sweat from packing and getting the bus ready, and rushed over to Kavarna, set up the stage and together with all of our kinfolk we sang with bittersweet voices as the last note rang out.

thehollands_0110Another of our favorites was in Chuck Parson’s basement in St. Louis MO. The crowd of kinfolk packed in and stood about two feet from us in a simi-circle. They danced and danced and sang their hearts out. Another would be at the last ever Cornerstone Festival in 2012 where 1000 or more kinfolk sang along, while our friends and former members of Seeds and Ballydowse joined us on stage. Then there was that time in Jesse and Janae’s backyard in Austin TX, under all of the twinkle lights and another time at the Fox Valley House in Appleton, WI when all the counselors from Camp Tekawitha came up on stage and sang with us. Speaking of Camp Tek, some of our fondest memories are of our Wednesday night sing-alongs. And, even that summer when we couldn’t make it, the campers still sang the song and our friend Eric sent us the video.

Teaching the song to our first French speaking crowd in Vann and Chantels barn in Quebec, CA was a blast and prepared us to teach it to all of our kinfolk in SE Asia. In fact, on of our favorite memories was leading the song in Yangon, Myanmar (Burma). We were playing on our hosts front porch, which opened to the busy street and many gathered around. We asked for a translator and a beautiful young woman stepped forward. She translated the lyrics and those standing there began to sing along with gusto. Then there were all the folk festivals in Australia, boy do folkies down under like to sing! And our kinfolk in Glenrowan, such a fun, rowdy bunch. Whew! Honestly, the list could go on and on!!

I reckon, even if touring comes to a close, even if we never make another album, our family will keep singing this song, with whomever, and where ever the Spirit allows.

And so, here’s a peak at our nearly 500 shows over the past five years. Have a gander, maybe you were at a few?

The Highlands of Vietnam

Di Linh (Vietnamese: Di Linh; French: Djiring) is a district (huyện) of Lâm Đồng Province in the Central Highlands region of Vietnam.

As of 2003 the district had a population of 154,472.The district covers an area of 1,628 km². The district capital lies at Di Linh.

And, that is about all Wikipedia has to say about the place. But, we would add so much more!

IMG_7729First off, going from sea level in Phan Theit, rolling through hills up to about 4000 feet into the highlands was spectacular! And the stops on the way up offered a taste of some of the best coffee in the world. And, for those who don’t know, coffee is one of Mr. Hollands love languages.

The coffee city that gets the most attention in the region is Da Lat and I’m sure it’s a wonderful place for tourists. For us, however, connecting with locals and learning about life through their eyes is more important. So, we were pleased when our friend Joe invited us to come with him up to visit Di Linh, to share a meal, story and sacred space with his kinfolk, who all happen to be coffee farmers.

IMG_1214The community treated us to a traditional meal, coffee of course, and we sang together. We were honored to find out we were there first international guests! We shared our story and they shared theirs and what we learned is that they have the same struggles many of us have around the world with desires for a good, healthy, long life and dealing with the many obsticals that can get in the way.

IMG_1230We met Than, a generational coffee farmer. Thans ancestors had farmed over a hundred hectares but after the war, his families land was seized and he now farms about two hectares. From that 2 hectares he produces 10 tonnes of bean; Arabica, robusta and a third coffee which is a blend. Most is sold to dealers to be exported.

He taught us about the growing process stating that the trees last for about 50 years, and produce bigger yields each year. Harvest time is in December and he hires on about 6 extra migrant workers to help with the harvest. A tarp is set on the ground that catches the beans as the workers pull them off the branches. Then the beans are then set out in the front yard to dry for 10 days before being packaged. Than also grows red flamingo flowers in green houses through out the year and sells them to stores all over Vietnam.

Honestly, Di Linh could have been any little rural town in the US where folks are hard working, value the land they live on and care about their families and their faith. It’s off the beaten path but for us Di Linh and the people we met there will always hold a special place in our hearts. And the coffee, that was just the warm up to the truest love language there is, connection.

Folklife Family Expedition

Folklife; is the accumulated traditions practiced or appreciated by members of a group who share a common history or way of life. A group’s traditions may include a wide range of skills and knowledge, from customs and belief to stories and songs, from music and dance to crafts and other decorative handmade objects. Generally, traditions are learned informally and passed on from one person in the group to the next, often orally, by imitation, or in performance.

Expedition; a journey or voyage undertaken by a  group of people with a particular purpose.

Family: We are a Mother, Father, Sister and Brother, bound by blood and vision to travel about this earth, spreading a message of reconciliation and connectivity through LOVE. We make our way sharing the gifts and talents given us; Music, Craftsmanship, Mentor-ship and Instruction, Merrymaking and Community building. We believe the opportunity for creativity in any culture engages humanity in the act of being human, offering dignity to both the creator and created. We see music and art as universal languages. They are tools that can bridge cultural gaps and offer opportunities to bring about peace. Using these tools, our desire is to connect with those we find along the way and encourage community and growth in relationship.

Here we go! A few months ago, when we ditched the bus in Alburqueque, New Mexico and put out a request to visit kinfolk in Southeast Asia, we couldn’t have imagined the way that our routing would be orchestrated. Of course, each day will be up to the good Lord, but we have a basic route to follow. We will travel light, with one small backpack and one instrument each, allowing for ease of load and plenty of opportunity to share story and song. We’ll be eyes wide open during this 9 week expedition, seeing sites, exploring the land and learning about the history in the places we go, but our main focus will be on learning from a local level about life through the eyes of our hosts. Our hope is to offer encouragement, share traditions and be able to come home with inspiration and stories of real people who are living lives of sacrifice, actively loving and caring for their neighbors and making a difference in a time such as this!

Nov 18 we fly to Manila Philippines, where we’ll come alongside KIDSIM, a far-reaching organization with various programs that cater to those most in need of food, shelter, education, and medical attention.

From there we fly to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. We will follow the routing in the photo above and will be connecting with a variety of hosts and communities along our way. Jan 12 we head to Singapore and then back to Australia until further notice.

Practically, our trip will be funded by the savings that we have made from our intense two month tour in Australia and a small handful of amazing friends and family who have faithfully given financially through our Modern Day fund. However, many have asked how they can help and we do actually have a few needs. One of the things we are finding is that many of our hosts do not have room to accommodate us, so the need for our lodging funds has increased. Also, we’ve just found out about added unforeseen visa costs and have been warned about bribes at border crossings. And, of course, we’d love to be able to share what we have with our hosts, so any extra will go straight from our hands to theirs.

And so, as you are rounding out your giving for 2015, we’d be so encouraged if you’d commit to care for us over the next bit of time, so that we can care for others. If you would like to become one of our patrons you can do so by visiting MODERN DAY. It’s easy, tax deductible and if you’d like to set up an on going monthly giving cycle, that’s an option too.

We can’t wait to share this adventure with you all and are profoundly moved every time we see God’s hand in our lives. We are so thankful for all of your encouragement, prayers and for trusting us with your gifts. This wouldn’t be possible without amazing grace and covenant community, so be blessed and know that you are loved!

Here we Roll

We’re rolling on down to Texas over the next month. We’ll have two new friends riding the bus with us.

1780901_212370275619978_1126500491_n Rhys Duursma, whom we met while visiting God Squad in Glenrowan, Vic, AUST. He’s the son of our host family and drummer in the rock and roll band, The Quick and The Dead. During our short time with them, we found a commonality in our faith and music. Rhys is a contemplative and thoughtful person with a great sense of humor. He began to dialogue with us about coming on board for a time back in April. The timing worked out and he’ll be riding with us from Chicago through to Austin.

10531211_10204260418494729_1692708406_nSylvia Christensen is a native of Green Bay, WI and a starting her second year at UWGB. We’ve known Sylvia and her family for the last ten years and have watched her blossom into a beautiful woman. She’s gifted in music, compassion and has a deep desire to use her gifts and talents to impact others. Last summer when Sylvia was contemplating what to do with her future, we offered her an open door to ride and learn with us. This summer the timing worked out and she’ll be on board from Chicago through to Hot Springs, AR.

Our itinerary is as follows:

Sept 9 Arriving in Austin TX and setting up life for a four-month stay. After three years full time on the road we are looking forward to this extended stay. We are hoping to use our time connecting with friends from past stop overs, and our main desire is to create and record a third album. On a side note, we are hoping to finish off some of our bus conversion, namely our bathroom shower and hot water heater.

So far 2014 has been an intense year, touring Australia, a two month trek across the country with fellow travelers, Greg and Jeffery, working at camp all summer long and now a one month trip down to Austin, TX. We have experienced the lows and highs of life, seen hope in the midst of hard times, met some of the most inspiring folks along the way, and found that through it all, as each day comes, we have just what we need, when we need it, sometimes to share and sometimes just for ourselves.

As we go into the mystery of the rest of this year, we would be so delighted if you would consider partnering with us. Your help on this leg of the journey would be affirming and appreciated.  You can do so through our Modern Day Missions Fund.
